Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. is pleased to present this week’s “Diamond Gamers of the Week” awards to Ashlea Wallace from Winfield High School and Jason Lewis from Buffalo High School.
The Winfield High School Lady Generals softball team is off to a great start this year under head coach Chuck Slater. The Generals are currently ranked number-3 in the state in Class AA, and are looking for a long run into the post-season. Much of that has to do with junior shortstop Ashlea Wallace. Last week in a win over Charleston Catholic, Ashlea hit for the rare cycle in the win.
When asked about her success, Ashlea says, “We have played well this year as a team. I think when I hit the ball, it carries over into my teammates and they hit the ball. I was able to do that last week.” Ashlea is regarded as one of the top, if not the best, shortstops in the entire state. When asked about her expectations for the post-season, Ashlea says, “I hope to be able to play into the post-season, and make it to the State Tournament. If we play together as a team we can go as far as we want.” Ashlea not only excels on the field but off the field as well where she carries a 3.3 GPA in the classroom.
The defending State Champ Buffalo Bisons baseball team is off to a tremendous start this season. The Bisons currently stand with a record of 9/8, but they have played many difficult teams this season.
Their good play has a lot to do with freshman phenom Jason Lewis. Last week in a 2-0 win over Poca, Jason threw a complete game shutout as the Bison won 2-0 over the Dots. In that game, Jason allowed only two hits and struck-out 10 batters. Those two hits were only two infield singles, bringing him close to a no-hitter.
When asked about his success last week Jason says, “My success had a lot to do with my confidence at the plate and on the mound. That allowed me to go out and get the job done.” The Bison have a lot of expectations after winning the State Championship in 2006, and Jason’s addition to the team has helped them again this year. When asked about his expectations for the post-season Jason says, “We want to be back in the State Championship and hopefully that is where we will be.” Jason says their success has to do with their defensive play. “Our defense has played well this year. We have been able to go out and get the job done defensively, and that has allowed us to win ballgames,” says Jason. Jason excels also in the classroom where he carries a 3.0 GPA.
Please look for Ashlea, Jason, and other local area high school athletes to be named next week’s Teays Physical Therapy Center Diamond Gamer of the Week.
