How sweet it is!
Poca Visual Volume seniors Glen Cook and Heather Gatens celebrated around the huge trophy after they sang and danced their way to the top of The Mountain State, winning the 2009 Grand Championship.
Under the direction of
Joseph Kincaid, Visual
Volume brought the
trophy home, snapping
Hurricane High School's
run of wins under
former Director Kim
Edwards, who stepped down from her position after last year's
championship.
The last time Visual Volume took the West Virginia
championship was when Gail Kennedy was the director, in 2002.
Hurricane's Red Hot slipped to second runner-up for 2009, still a strong showing in the tough competition.
Poca's Glen Cook was also honored as the school's top vocalist.
Here is a list of the standings for the state-wide competition:
Grand Champion -- Poca,
Visual Volume
First Runner Up -- Martinsburg, Good Times
2nd Runner Up -- Hurricane, Red Hot
3rd Runner Up -- St Albans, Classix
4th Runner Up -- Cabell Midland, Rhythm in Red
All these schools along with Nitro received a Superior rating.
Best Band -- Martinsburg
Best Choral Sound -- Poca
Best Choreography -- Poca
Best Costumes -- Hurricane
Best Show Design -- St. Albans
Middle School Grand Champion -- Dunbar, Dunbar Singers
First RU -- Horace Mann, Eagle Pride
