Winfield Police Department Captain Ron Smith was the town's highest-paid

employee in 2006
according to a salary list
released to after
PutnamLIVE.com filed a
Freedom of Information Act
Request.

Smith earned $44,696.55, more than $12,000 more than his Chief of Police, Jeff W. Stephenson.

"I don't have a problem with that," says Stephenson. "I always tell my guys to get the best salary possible." Even if that means Smith's boss only was paid $32,293.32 for the year.

There's a reason. Stephenson says Smith is paid as a Prevention Resource Officer by the State of West Virginia. The position is budgeted higher than a small-town Chief of Police salary.

"They offered me his job but I couldn't afford the cut in pay," jokes Smith. "Seriously, Chief is OK with everything. There's no problem.

Near the top of the salary list is Wastewater Operator/Town Maintenance man Bill Harper at $34,152.27, Town Public Works/Wastewater Maintenance man Johnny Hodges at $34,128.61 and Winfield Town Hall Administrator Connie Sansom at $34,088.40
