Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. is pleased to present this week’s “Cagers of the Week” awards to Adam Scott of Buffalo High School, Katie Cloxton of Winfield High School, and Zack Statler of Hurricane High School.
The Buffalo Bison boy’s basketball team had another terrific run for the 2008 season. Much of their success had to do with senior guard Adam Scott.
On Senior Night, against Hannan High School, Scott knew this was his last time to play in front of his home crowd. Adam says, “I wanted to go out and do the best I could, and have a good game in the last opportunity I had to play in the Buffalo home gym.” He did just that, scorching the nets for 41 points in route to a blowout win over Hannan High School.
Scott says, “We want to keep working hard and winning, and hopefully get back to the State Tournament.”
The Bison play Wahama High School in the regional championship to determine who will go to the tournament this week. Scott says, “I feel if we can continue to control the rebounds, it will enable us to play our game and hopefully we can progress far into the post-season.”
The Winfield High School Lady Generals have advanced to the state tournament in consecutive years.
Their play this year has much to do with the leadership of senior guard Katie Cloxton. Last week, in the regional championship over Sissonville High School Cloxton led her team to victory by scoring 17 points. She also added 9 assists and 4 steals in the 64-48 win.
When asked about her success, Cloxton says, “I felt like I needed to step it up last week and lead our team to victory. We all played well.”
Cloxton will be attending Campbell University next year where she plans to pursue basketball.
She is also a leader in the classroom where she carries a 3.75 GPA. When asked about her expectations for the post-season, Cloxton says, “I feel when we play our best ball, no one can beat us. We have so much talent on this team, and I hope to do well this week in the state tournament.”
The Hurricane High School boy’s team concluded their 2008 season this week with a 48-46 loss to Cabell Midland in the sectional tournament. Despite the loss, the Redskins boy’s team had a very good year.
The play of senior guard Zack Statler contributed to much of their success. Statler had 20-point games in the loss to Cabell Midland, and also in a prior loss to cross county rival Winfield High School in overtime.
When asked about his success this year, Statler humbly points his accolades to his teammates. Zack says, “My teammates found ways to get me the ball throughout the season. When the ball was thrown in, our big guys would kick the ball out for open shots, and our unselfishness helped produce some wins.”
Statler carries a 3.3 GPA in the classroom, showing his versatility not only on the court but off the court as well. Statler compares himself to NBA player Ray Allen. Zack says, “Allen is a great shooter, and I like to think of myself in that form of a basketball player. He is unconscious, and he never thinks about what he did earlier in the game. He just keeps playing his style of basketball.”
This is the last article for the 2008 Cagers of the Week. Look for our upcoming announcement of Cager of the Year and the future Diamond Gamers of the Week and Tracksters of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc.
