"THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!"     Putnam County Celebrates Our Veterans
By Mark Hallburn

They are the men and women who put their lives on the line for our                                freedom. Some gave                                    their lives. Others                                      came home alive, while                          leaving parts of                                   themselves, including                                hearts and limbs, on                                      the battlefield. Some                                  are decorated, others                              toiled without awards.                           Tragically, some are                                    still missing.

In Iraq, Vietnam,                                    Korea, in Europe, on                                   the seas, in the skies,                                  on foreign soil and                                        here in the United                                   States, during war and                              peace, our Veterans,                                   drafted and volunteer,                               served America across                                    the globe. They are truly special people. Too often, they were not respected, not thanked, and felt less than appreciated.

Sunday, November 9th, Putnam County did its best to honor our veterans saying "Thank you for your service" in a special event outside the Winfield Courthouse. About 100 people turned out in cold weather to warm the hearts of Veterans by sharing the love, appreciation, and saying "Thank you for your service."

The event was conceived and organized by Putnam County Commissioner Raymond "Joe" Haynes, a Navy Veteran who wanted to create a special day to say "Thank you for your service" to the men and women who fought for America.

Haynes hosted the ceremony, however, he spent his time recognizing and commending Veterans from the every branch of the military, the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Merchant Marines. Sunday was their day, to be thanked by the civilians that they served, as well as their peers.

Among the guest speakers was Putnam County's most decorated Veteran, Don Kinnard. Haynes surprised Kinnard with a special plaque and proclamation from the Putnam County Commission, honoring, amongst his many awards, eight purple hearts earned in battle.

While Kinnard and the Veterans enjoyed their well-deserved moments of gratitude, a poignant memorial a few yards from the stage reminded everyone that some of America's heroes will never have the opportunity to be thanked. They, too, were honored by Haynes and the gathering for giving their lives in the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

As part of the ceremony, the Winfield High School Band, Tall Flags, and St. Albans Junior ROTC performed.

Other guest speakers were Adjutant Gen. Allen Tackett and Mary Byrd, district commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Putnam County is steeped in military history. It gets its name from Colonel Israel Putnam, commander of the Battle of Bunker Hill. In addition, the Town of Winfield, Putnam's County seat, is named in honor of General  Winfield Scott.
