Two Putnam County Schools’ rising ninth grade students have been chosen to attend the Governor’s School for Mathematics and Science this summer. Erin Fankhanel of Hurricane Middle School and Luke Miller of Winfield Middle School will attend the academic enrichment programs in July.
Erin, the daughter of Jim and Karrie Fankhanel of Hurricane, will study at the Radio Telescope and Scientific Research Observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia; and Luke, son of Mark and Karen Miller of Scott Depot, will study at West Virginia University in Morgantown.
Students are chosen for the program through a competitive application process sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education. They must demonstrate a high aptitude for mathematics and/or science, as demonstrated by WESTEST or other standardized test scores and attain at least a B+ average in math and science. Additionally, they must have an interest in these fields, the recommendations of their teachers, and a capacity to communicate effectively with others.
Both sessions will provide the Putnam students with enrichment opportunities to broaden their understanding of the role of scientific research in society. They will sample astronomy, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering, as well as a balance of social and recreational activities.
