SOUTH CHARLESTON ENDS HURRICANE'S
Number One Black Eagles Drop Redskins

It wasn't a blowout, but it was a statement. South Charleston held                                   onto its Number one                                   state ranking in a                                          decisive 21-14 defeat                                    of Hurricane, Friday                                      night.

After toying with the                                       'Skins in the first half,                                    the Black Eagles came out in the second and put the game away.

Running back Aaron Slusher ground out 173 yards on 23 carries with two scores including the winner in the fourth quarter as the Black Eagles remained undefeated.

Hurricane came into the game undefeated as well, ranked Number two in West Virginia with hoped of toppling the King of the Mountain State AAA rankings.

That never happened.

Instead, a homecoming crowd of nearly 5,500 under the Friday Night Lights drove home in the dark, disappointed.

This was a game fought in the trenches. For South Charleston, it was "In your face football, running it right at Hurricane, and doing it well.

"We just decided we were going to run the football,'' says Black Eagles Coach John Messinger. "We decided we were going to come out and run, use our hogs up front and just get after it. South Charleston football is just hit somebody in the mouth."

"They're strong up front,'' said Hurricane coach Willis May. "You can't turn the ball over and beat a team like that. We bent a little bit, but we didn't break a couple of times. Defensively we stopped them and got the ball back and we were driving right there. We'll just come back and get ready for next week.''

In the other significant Putnam County game, the Winfield Generals pounded the Poca Dots 33-12 at O.O. White Stadium.

Gens' Quarterback Taylor Farley ran four one touchdown and scored another as he continued his stellar season.

The win was a bright spot for Winfield which has struggled in its transition from AA to AAA.
