Scott made the trek down US 119 to play The Poca Dots on the campus of Poca High School Friday night April 25th. The Skyhawks went home disappointed.
It was a nip and tuck game all the way except the runs came in bunches. Poca took a 2 - 0 lead in the second inning off a solo home run by senior shortstop Josh Smalley. Then senior pitcher Adam Snydor helped his own cause by getting a hit. Not to be out-done, senior second baseman Rusty Gibson singled. Then sophomore Seth Stidham singled in Adam Snydor. Poca led 2 - 0.
The Skyhawks weren't done yet. Starting pitcher Kam Akers hammered a grand slam, making the score 4 - 2 after 2 1/2 innings of play.
The Dots had a double play in the 2nd inning from Rusty Gibson to shortstop Josh Smalley at second for a force out. Smalley then threw sharply to sophomore David Beavor at first for the second out. The play erased a error. Rusty Gison caught a popup to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Dots tied the game when senior Ian Humphrey doubled. Josh Smalley followed with his second home run over the right field fence . The two runner tied the score at four.
The Dots scored two more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. The rally was started when freshman second baseman Alex Staats drew a walk and stole second for the second time on the day. Then sophomore Seth Stidham Doubled in Staats. Then freshman Tyler Moore singled And sophomore leadoff hitter Caleb Arthur brought Tyler Moore in with a deep fly ball for a RBI. And now Poca led 6 - 4 after 4 innings of play. Poca pitcher Adam Snydor had struck out the side in the 4th inning of play.
In the fifth inning Poca came up with two more runs. The rally was led when Ian Humphrey lead off with a hit Junior Roman Gibson ran for him and promptly took 2nd on a steal and third on a wild pitch. After two outs Adam Snydor helped his own cause when he got another hit and drove Roman Gibson in to score. Scott then walked Alex Staats and while he was trying to steal second, Adam Snydor scored, thus making the score 8 - 4 Poca.
It looked like the game was over But Scott came up with three runs in the top of the seventh. Tyler Ramsey got a hit. Junior catcher Drew Runyan followed with a single to left field. Then left fielder Dale Holstein struck out. Junior shortstop Eric Price few out to David Beavor at first. Now the boy that hit the grand slam was up. Kam Akers singled, driving in their sixth run. Then senior first baseman Eric Gibson doubled, driving in a run which made the score 8 - 7. The next batter in the order was sophomore right fielder Tyler Thompson who was hit by a pitch and took 1st. Then senior 3rd baseman Corey Prince lined a hard drive toward first base and David Beavor speared it to end the game with Poca winning a 8 - 7 barn burner over the Scott Skyhawks. Josh Smalley pitched to the last man and got the save.
Adam Snydor got the win giving up seven runs and striking out eight Scott batters.
Pitching for Scott was junior Kam Akers. He gave up four runs and four hits in two innings of work. Sophomore Tyler Ramsey threw the last five innings. He gave up six hits and four runs. They combined to give up ten hits, eight runs, four strike outs and three walks.
Having the big bat for Poca was Josh Smalley who was 2 for 3 hitting the ball and smashed 2 Home Runs and drove in 3 runs. Seth Stidham was also 2 for 3 hitting the ball and smacked a Double and drove in two runs. Ian Humphrey was 2 for 3 batting the ball and smashed a Double. Adam Snydor was 2 for 3 hitting the ball and drove in a run. Rusty Gibson had a hit in only time he went to bat. Alex Staats walked twice and stole 3 bases and scored. Caleb Arthur drove in a run. Tyler Moore had a hit and walked. Roman Gibson stole two bases and scored.
The defense won this game - Pitchers Adam Snydor and Josh Smalley. Shortstop Josh Smalley, Catcher Ian Humphrey ( had a great throw out at 2nd base. ) 2nd base Rusty Gibson, Alex Staats. 3rd base sophomore Seth Stidham, and 1st baseman David Beavor ( who made that great stab. ) Leftfield Tyler Moore, rightfield Taylor Humphrey,
The coaches have done a great job of moving the boys around with all the injuries- Head coach P.E. McClanahan asst. Danny Wandling, Adam Knight, Drew Jarrell. And a special thanks for all the help from - Richie Eads, and Bob Humphrey, Aaron Staats.
