Scott Teays Elementary School in Putnam County has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The designation means Scott Teays is a model of excellence for other schools to emulate.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools program honors public and private schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement. Scott Teays qualifies as high performing for their student achievement in the top ten percent in the state in both reading and mathematics.
To vie for the honor, schools must first be named West Virginia Schools of Excellence and then nominated by the state for the national distinction. A panel of assessment specialists reviews the nominated schools’ applications for the U.S. Department of Education and announces national winners in October.
In congratulating Scott Teays, Superintendent Harold L. "Chuck" Hatfield reminds us that education is a team effort. “This recognition is really an acknowledgement of the the students, parents, and staff at Scott Teays,” he says. “It is their hard work, high expectations, and collaboration that have earned them this honor. We’re truly proud of the entire school community,” he states.
Only the principal and one staff member of the school may attend the November awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Pitzer will be accompanied by teacher Vickie Stapleton, who was selected by the staff as their representative.
