SADD HELPS AT DUI CHECKPOINT
Students Volunteer To Educate Drivers

It isn't every day that you are approached at a DUI checkpoint by a teenager wearing Tie Dye, or a tanktop, or a T-shirt and shades.

But it isn't every day that students are giving out great advice to drivers, including, "Fasten your seat belt." And "Don't drink and drive." Those words usually heard from police. But this time the great advice was coming from teenagers. Instead of partying until the wee hours, Students Against Destructive Decisions volunteered their time on a recent Saturday night to hand out fliers at a Winfield DUI checkpoint.

As police kept a watchful eye, students handed out fliers to drivers as well as toys to children that came with an important message: "Make the right decision."

Pleasantly surprised drivers thanked the students who were having a great time. Police enjoyed the student's company, making an otherwise tedious task a lot more lively.

"It's great to see these students out making a difference," says Winfield Chief of Police Jeff W. Stevenson. "They care about their community and want to help drivers make safe decisions."

The volunteer work by SADD comes as no surprise to Regional Coordinator Larry Kendall.

"When you set great expectations for teenagers," explains Kendall, "They will exceed those expectations. Teenagers have a ton of talent, and great energy. When you focus both, the results are amazing."
