Frank Jones was one of those teachers that you
never forget.
My father had him
as a band director for six years when he was in junior high and high
school from 1961-1967. My father has told me many stories about how
Frank was always very disciplined. But he only wanted the best out
of the kids. And he would push them until they got it right. Whether
it was hitting the right notes or marching the correct formation.
That's what teachers are for. To guide you and discipline you when
you got out of line. Frank had no problems with discipline.
My father has told me some great stories and most of them are just
downright funny. My father played percussion when he was in the
band. To give you some sense of what kind of humor Mr. Jones had, my
brother became good friends with his son. One day Mr. Jones came to
pick his son up from our house. Not seeing my father for so many
years, he asked my father in a pretty straight forward manner "you
still playing your drums?" Of course he would crack a little smile
after asking him.
I had Mr. Jones for a Music Appreciation teacher back in the 6th
grade. He knew I was Dave Erwin's son and always treated me nicely.
Looking back, I guess you just don't realize at the time how much of
an impact a person can have on you. There are a few teachers I can
remember having over the years. But nobody can forget Mr. Jones.
