Putnam County Schools

Putnam County Schools has once again been named a Blue Ribbon School District by Expansion Management Magazine. Winners of this award are considered among the most outstanding school districts in the nation.

Expansion Management, a research group that evaluates and compares business locations for companies, rated Putnam among the nation’s top school districts included in a study that compared 2,819 school systems from across the country.

The study indicates how well school districts prepare students for the 21st Century workforce and is especially rewarding to Putnam County educators, who have made 21st Century thinking skills and tools a major focus at every grade level. These skills and tools are especially important to the business community, for whom this study was prepared.  The report is furnished to CEO’s of companies who are considering expanding into new locales and who often use it to determine where the workforce is highly skilled and qualified.

“Businesses go where the schools can provide them with knowledgeable and skilled employees; they go where their children will receive the best education,” states Putnam Superintendent Harold "Chuck" Hatfield. “This award confirms that Putnam County is a place where businesses would want to be,” he says.

This year’s Education Quotient included all school districts in the United States with an enrollment of at least 3,300 students. The study measured three categories: student achievement, financial commitment to education, and community education and income levels. The data is compared with data from all other districts in the study in order to determine an overall ranking. School districts ranking in the upper one-third receive the Blue Ribbon.

“Receiving this award is obviously a tribute to our community as well as our schools,” says Superintendent Hatfield. “The support of this community sends a strong message to everyone that the Putnam County values education,” he states.

Putnam County Schools was the only West Virginia school district to earn a Blue Ribbon.  Each of the other West Virginia districts included in the study earned a lesser designation.
