Putnam
County’s 2007-08 high school ACT scores, those used to
assess high school
students' general
educational
development and their
ability to complete
college-level work, are
once again higher than
the composite scores
for the rest of the state and nation.
Putnam County’s composite score for 2007-08 is 21.5, which is
consistent with its performance of the past few years. The West
Virginia composite average is 20.7, while nationally, students
scored a composite average of 21.1. The highest possible score on
the ACT is 36.
The 215 question college entrance test was instituted in 1959, and today is required by four-year colleges in 50 states. The multiple-choice tests cover English, mathematics, reading, and science. The optional writing test measures skill in planning and writing short essays.
This year, 389 Putnam students took the ACT, and for the seventh year, their scores were above the state and national averages.
