Putnam County Technical & Career Center Pro-Start students,
winners of the 2007-
2008 West Virginia
Hospitality Education
and Training Cup, can
cook up more than a
good meal, as they
demonstrated when
they met with the West Virginia Coordinating Council to discuss
project-based learning.
While demonstrating their cooking and presentation skills, the
students fielded questions from the West Virginia State
Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, and WVDE Directors and
Coordinators. Specifically of interest to the Council were the
methods used at the PCTC to assess project-based learning.
Instructor Joy Dalton and PCTC principal Robert Manley also
discussed project-based learning and its application to employment.
Besides ProStart, Manley cited the Putnam County Schools building
construction, masonry, HVAC, AutoCad, plumbing, electrical
technology and CISCO programs as examples of project-based learning
at its best.
Manley reports that WVDE representatives said this presentation was
the best “eye-opener for project-based learning and career and
technical education” that they have received.
