Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. is pleased to present this week’s “Cager of the Week” awards to Courtney Wilson and Ethan Peterson of Calvary Baptist Academy.
The Calvary Baptist Patriot’s boys and girls basketball teams have accomplished much in the past couple years. The girls have won the MCAC Title the last two years, and the boys have had similar success.
The 2008 season has seen an increase in schedule strength. Despite the fact they have more losses on the record, the Calvary Baptist girls have played some challenging opponents.
Much of their success this year has to do with the play of sophomore player Courtney Wilson. Courtney is one of the leading scorers on the team.
Her coach, Trudy Totten, sees many other strengths in her player’s abilities. Coach Totten says, “Courtney plays hard. She has had a few games where she could have shot the ball more and scored, but she really wants to get her teammates involved. Sometimes, I wish she was more selfish with the basketball when it came to scoring points.”
Courtney humbly accepts praise, but never takes it from her teammates. Courtney says, “I like to think that I have good court vision, and I see the floor well. The reason we have been successful is because of my teammates and our play. We genuinely like each other, and never have any problems on or off the court.”
Courtney not only excels on the court, but off the court as well where she carries a 4.0 GPA.
The Calvary boys’ basketball team is off to a great start this year, currently standing at a 15-3 record.
In their last win, senior guard Ethan Peterson scored 23 points in a 73-45 win over New Life Christian.
When asked about his success, Ethan points all accolades towards his coach, Tom Sutherland. “Coach Sutherland has been a great addition to our school’s program. I have learned so much in the last couple years from my coach. He has allowed me to understand the game better,” says Ethan.
Ethan looks to help his team to a championship at the end of the year. “We hope to do well and hopefully win the MCAC tournament this year," he says. That is going to take hard work, but my teammates are ready and we hope to bring home the title.”
Ethan also carries a 4.0 GPA in the classroom.
Look for Courtney, Ethan, and other local area high school athletes to be named next week’s Cagers of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc.
