NEWHOUSE DOESN'T LIVE IN HURRICANE
City Manager Lives In Unincorporated Area

Hurricane City Manager Ben Newhouse, the man who told longtime
town residents living next to the Wal-Mart construction site to
move if they object to construction noise, can't hear the noise
at his home, because he doesn't live in Hurricane.
PutnamLIVE.com has learned that Newhouse lives outside
the town he manages, in an unincorporated area of Putnam County.
Newhouse hasn't returned calls from PutnamLIVE.com
seeking comment on the issue. Neither has Hurricane Mayor
Raymond Peak.
"We knew that when we hired him," rationalizes Hurricane City
Council Member Scott Edwards. "He's a good City Manager."
While many cities require employees to live in town, including
Huntington, Edwards says Hurricane does not require city
employees to live in the city limits, just elected officials.
Still, Newhouse's residency outside of Hurricane doesn't sit
well with everyone. Some feel he will have a better
understanding of town issues if he lives in the city. And the
feel that if Newhouse is taking a salary from Hurricane he
should live in town.
"I think Mr. Newhouse, if he takes the taxpayer's money should live
within the city limits," says Phil Pennington. "And he's not within
the city limits he should sell his fine house and move within the
city limits."
Hurricane officials initially declined to release Newhouse's
salary without a Freedom of Information Act request which PutnamLIVE.com
submitted January 9th.
Beth Lilly of Hurricane's financial department responded to the
FOIA and reports Newhouse is paid $61,425 annually.
