PutnamLIVE.com congratulates the Hurricane High School Marching Redskins for their State Championship!
The award-winning marching band has added another to their tally of awards this season. At the 2nd Annual Tournament of Bands State Championship held October 13th in Charleston, Hurricane was named State Champion in Group 4 (largest bands).
The Redskin Band swept the class awards, winning Best Auxiliary, Best Music, Best Visuals, Best Percussion, Best Drum Major and first place band. By earning the highest overall score of any band at the competition, Hurricane was also named the 2007 West Virginia TOB State Grand Champion.
The award is just the latest success for the Marching Redskins who have become a marching, musical powerhouse.
This year the Hurricane Band has been named Grand Champion at the Music in the Mountains Festival in Kingwood, the Cabell Midland Band Festival in Ona, the Buckeye Classic in Ironton, OH and the Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins. The will serve as the Honor Band for the 2008 Forest Festival.
The 2007 Hurricane Band, under the direction of Sam Leffingwell, Jr., continues its competition season on October 27th, when it travels to Ritchie County for a US Scholastic Bands Association-sanctioned event.
Leffingwell will look a little different this next time out. He promised band members that they could shave his head if they won the TOB Championship. Naturally, they were more than happy to apply the razor to their director, so it was "off with the locks" in celebration of their win.
The Redskins will defend their 2006 Grand Champion title at the Tri-State Marching Band Festival at Marshall University on November 3rd and finish out the season at the USSBA Nationals at M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens, on November 17th.
