Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. is pleased to present this week’s “Cagers of the Week” awards to Brittany Sayre of Poca High School and Brittany Lee of Winfield High School.
The Poca High School Lady Dots have had a few off seasons since the play of star guard Rudi Raynes. This season, however, the Dots have seen a resurgence in their girl’s basketball team. Much of that has to do with the play of young guard Brittany Sayre.
Last week, Brittany led her team to two victories over opposing teams. When asked about her success, Brittany says, “We came out and played hard. The coaches had a good game plan, and have coached us well this year. We try to listen to them and it is starting to show.”
Brittany credits other aspects of the game for her ability to score. “I was pumped up last week and it showed in my game. I tried to take the ball to the hoop and score more,” Brittany says.
Brittany not only excels on the court, but off the court as well where she carries a 3.0 GPA in the classroom. Brittany’s favorite WNBA player is Lisa Leslie. Brittany said, “I want to be like her. She is a great player, and I would like to pattern may game after her.”
The Winfield High School Lady Generals have had much success the last couple years in the girls’ basketball program. With two state titles in four years under their belts, the Lady Generals have made a championship game two other times before falling short.
This week, the Lady Generals faced back to back games with arch rival Sissonville, and then a road trip to Summers County to face the Bobcats. With two tough games, you look for leadership, and that is exactly what they got with senior guard Brittany Lee.
Brittany hit the game winning shot in overtime against Sissonville. She then led her team to victory while playing sick in a two point overtime victory against Summers County on Saturday.
When asked about her success, Brittany says, “I think we came out and played well as a team. I was sick, and I think it caused me to focus more and it really showed in my game.”
Brittany is also a leader in the classroom where she carries a 3.98 GPA. When asked about the goals for this season, Brittany says, “Obviously, our goal is to win the State Championship. We fell short last year, and the seniors want to go out on a winning note with a ring this year.”
When asked about whom she compares herself to, Brittany said, “I love Michael Jordan, but I won’t compare myself to him. He was the ultimate team player, and he just wanted to win, that is how I view things.”
Look for Brittany Sayre, Brittany Lee, and other local area high school athletes to be named next week’s Cager of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc.
