On a cold evening with a bone-chilling wind, The Lady Huskies made the trek down to Jeff Wymer Field on the campus of Winfield High School to play a softball game Thursday evening April 5th, 2007.
It was a battle of highly ranked teams as Number 3 Winfield was hosting Number 4 Herbert Hoover.
On the cold night less than 100 hardy fans showed up for the mighty competition between the two traditional softball powers and a nemesis to each other.
But the adrenaline was flowing for The Lady Generals as they dominated and muzzled The Lady Huskies in a 10 -0 skunking of the team from Elk River.
Winfield's junior pitcher Kristen Workman (7 - 0) was over-powering. Kristen only gave up two hits and struck out seven Hoover batters. She didn't walk a batter and sat the side down in order during 4-of-the-6 innings she pitched.
Hoover-s All-State pitcher from last year, Leanne Murphy, came off the mound after only 2 1/2 innings. She allowed 5 runs mostly on walks and unearned runs. eThe exception was Lorren Cullens's double in the first inning.
Having the big bat was junior 1st baseman Cullen who was 1-for-1 at the plate and drove in four runs-including a two-run double to lead The Lady Generals.
Junior Ashton Anderson drove in a run. Sophomore Ashley Brown had a hit. Junior shortstop Ashlea Wallace scored on a fielder's choice by Cullen. Ashlea got on base when she was hit by a pitch. Wallace then stole second and third. Sophomore 3rd-sacker Jennifer France drove in The Lady General's sixth run in the 4th inning on a ground out to third.
Winfield scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning behind 3 errors and a sacrifice fly for a 9 - 0 lead.
The Lady Generals scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two run double by Cullen. Winfield added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, brought on by two walks, steals, passed balls and wild pitches.
On defense they gave no quarter here either as Ashlea Wallace is the best shortstop in West Virginia bar none.
Senior Chelsea Bell maybe the best catcher in AA . All-State junior pitcher Kristen Workman if she isn't the best she sure can make you laugh. Outfielder and senior Brianna Tucker is a fine outfielder, and junior centerfielder Ashton Anderson can also cover the turf and sophomore outfielder Ashley Brown plays hard. She is getting better every game.
As for the infield it is one of the best around with Ashlea Wallace at short, senior 2nd baseman Kelcie Jones is also playing very well right now, as is sophomore 3rd baseman Jennifer Francis. Junior 1st baseman Lorren Cullen may have the best bat right now. Senior designated hitter Chelsie Hedrick has also had a good year hitting the ball. Head Coach Chuck Slater with the help of his coaches - Kevin Dickson and Al Jones has the Class AA 3rd ranked and 9 - 0 Lady Generals playing in top form.
Runs Hits Errors Walks
Hoover Lady Huskies 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 2 4 4
