Putnam County Owned And Operated

The beautiful woodwork in John’s home office and study, as well as the rest of the Chateau, was crafted by Matt Browning, in Hurricane. “He did an awesome job,” says John. We looked at woodwork samples from around the United States, and Matt’s work was outstanding.” Crist says that with the exception of the stonework, which was done by 18 masons from Nashville, all of the work was done with local workers
The stone pavers in the entrance were added with sand and dirt in the traditional manner. There are 4,400 square feet of pavers around the Chateau including the back patio area.
John’s mahogany desk has been the centerpiece of his office for 10 years. There are four large windows and a French door in the office. They are low-energy, double-paned, permeated gas windows. There are 88 windows in the home. John added a special 3M film to the windows to protect the woodwork from fading.
The living room and dining room each have stone fireplaces that were created in France. They each weigh 4,000 pounds and are 8-feet wide by 10-feet tall. The medallions and crown molding around the chandeliers are imported from Belgium.
The entry, including the hallways, is 40-feet wide by 60-feet long. The entry leads into the living room on the north side and the dining room on the south side.

The entryway porcelain floor is part of 6,000 square-feet of two-feet by two-feet squares that are part of John’s Chateau. The Chandelier over the Great Room is one of 22 in the home. It weighs 500 pounds, is 10-feet tall and is 8-feet wide. It is on a special lift that can lower and raise the chandelier so that its 88 lights can be easily cleaned. The Great Room ceiling is 50-feet high at the copper dome.
John’s Chateau sits on 12 acres which are part of his family’s 60 acre estate. There are 16 rooms in the home. John has “no idea” how many trees are on the estate, and has planted a number of shrubs and plants to enhance the Chateau's incredible beauty.
The bronze moose in John’s front lawn were created by a Jon Mattes, a Swedish sculptor, in 1968. Before John brought them to his Lion Heart Chateau, they graced the lawns of several prominent east coast estates.

When John Crist returned home to Putnam County, he decided to build his dream home on his family's estate near Hurricane.
That he did. And then some.
At more than 12,500 square feet, filled with art, antiques, and furnishings from around the world, Crist's Lion Heart Chateau is compared to a brilliant diamond: Each facet is beautiful. There are many breathtaking views.
