When a financial service company decides to show its support for                            education, it does it in                               the way it knows best…                            financially. Each year,                                ING Financial Services                            selects 100 national                                 finalists to receive a                               $2000 grant to support                                   an educational                                     program.

This year, Melissa                                 Isaacs, kindergarten                                teacher at Scott Teays                         Elementary School, is                                    a finalist in the ING                              Unsung Heroes                                          program.

Isaacs' project, “Listen, Learn, and Love Literacy” was selected for its innovative methods, creativity, and ability to positively influence students.

Isaacs will use the award to establish a Listening Library at Scott Teays, from which her kindergarteners may borrow developmentally appropriate books, along with CDs and CD players, to take home. Isaacs believes this will make it easier for busy parents to share reading opportunities with their children and improve children’s listening skills, vocabulary, and language skills. Because listening to fluent reading improves reading ability, Isaac hopes that this activity will provide a positive intervention that will lead to the promotion of early literacy skills and a love of reading.
