Alex Wilson has always worn red. From the Hurricane Redskins to the Texas A & M Aggies, Wilson has worn red. Now he will get the chance to wear Bosox red.
Wilson, was the 77th overall pick and Boston's second of the 2009 draft.
A hard-throwing right- hander, Wilson appeared in 24 games for the Aggies in 2009, compiling a 6-6 record and a 4.22 ERA. He struck out a team-best 120 batters on the year in just under 90 innings of work while holding opposing hitters to a .237 average. Of his 24 outings, 16 came in relief--all later in the season--as Wilson also picked up a pair of saves.
Now he has the chance to take the mound at Fenway Park, where legends including Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling led the Bosox to battle against the New York Yankees.
Wilson has fought battles before, on and off the mound. In 2007, he underwent "Tommy John" elbow surgery. In 2008, the Chicago Cubs drafted Wilson, but he elected to return to College Station to play instead.
"I rebuilt myself, to be completely honest," Wilson told the Charleston Newspapers. "From there, it's not only a physical thing but a mental thing. I had to convince myself that I was able to do it.
"I've got a new arm. You can't ask for much
more than that. I'm completely healthy and I've felt that way the
majority of the year."
Wilson was at home, in Hurricane, when he got the telephone call
that told him Boston grabbed him in the draft. But he won't be
around Hurricane long. This Boy of Summer will spend his summer
toiling on the mounds of minor league stadiums while he chases his
dream.
And Wilson wouldn't want it any other way.
