So far the Redskins have held opponents scoreless. Undefeated and un-scored upon on! That sounds more like Willis May and Jackie Erwin's defensive football team But it is true. The Hurricane High Baseball team has finished their first week of play 3 - 0 and unscored upon. They have given up five hits and held the other guys to zero runs. Hurricane batters have done their part as well. Twenty five Redskins have crossed home plate.
Redskins Crush TimberWolves
In the first game senior Arik Sikula struck out 17 batters in a six-inning one-hitter. Sikula only walked two opponents. He was just overpowering on the night.
And he helped his cause at the plate. Sikula out-hit the Timberwolves by himself as he was 2-for-3 . Sikula smashed a double and a two-run homer.
First baseman Andrew Hill also hammered a two-run shot.
Senior centerfielder Cam Dunlavy slammed two doubles.
Sophomore shortstop Brett Barber had two hits and smashed a double.
Junior 3rd baseman Justin Henry had two hits
Junior catcher Thor Meeks smashed a double.
The Redskins took control of the game early and never looked back. They rode the arm of Sikula and their powerful hitting to the 11 - 0 skunking of the T - Wolves.
Hurricane Dumps Riverside Warriors
In the second game of the season, Billy Joe Hicks took his team up I - 77 to Quincy on the banks of the Kanawha River to play The Riverside Warriors.
The defense played hard in this game. It was the 7th inning before the Warriors got a hit or the ball out of the infield. As Senior pitchers Kyle Blank and his partner in crime junior Justin Henry baffled the Warriors' hitters. The game was played before nearly 170 raucous fans. John Long got the lone hit for The Warriors on the night.
Offensively The Redskins scored twice in the first frame off Kyle Blank's grounder. Cam Dunlavy crossed home plate after getting on with a base hit. Then Andrew Hill drove in a run later.
Hurricane scored 4 runs in the 4th inning highlighted by catcher Thor Meeks' hit and Chris Finks sacrifice fly. The rest of the runs came on wide pitches or walks.
Having a big bat for Hurricane was senior shortstop Arik Sikula who slammed a double, as well as sophomore Brett Barber who showed speed and beat out two hits on the night.
The Redskins burned up the base paths, stealing an amazing nine bags on their way to a 7 - 0 rout of the Warriors.
Redskins Shutout Highlanders
In the third game Hurricane made the trip to the campus of Hunington High School.
Fortunately O.J. Mayo doesn't play baseball. However, Hurricane does as sophomore Brett Barber pitched a whale of a game Brett pitched a complete shutout game and struck out 9 Huntington batters. Brett allowed only 3 weak singles two to Scott Westcott ( 2 of 4 ) and 1 to Brycen Ferguson ( 1 for 4 )
Westcott pitched for Huntington and allowed five hits and two walks. He was relieved by Chris Rakes who pitched three innings. Rakes gave up only three hits and had two strike outs.
On offense Hurricane was led by senior left fielder Kyle Blank and Lead off hitter junior right fielder Billy Smith who was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate and Chris Finch slammed a double. Catcher Thor Meeks singled in a run. The defense did its usual great job. Arik Sikula walked two times. Cam Dunlavy played well at centerfield and Justin Henry played well at third.
Thanks to Cam Dunlavy is a fine kid and has helped me in many ways as has his family they are good friends and just plain nice people.
