Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc., is pleased to present this week’s “Cager’s of the Week” awards to Staci Holbrook of Calvary Baptist Academy and Katie Monk of Cross Lanes Christian School.
The Calvary Baptist Patriots are off to a great season. They currently stand with a 17-4 mark, and beating some good teams along the way. Last week in a 51-40 win over Fairhaven, Staci scored her 1000th career point. This went along with an 18 point, 15 rebound performance. When asked about her success, Staci says, “I think we went back to the basics and passed the ball really well, and this allowed us to win a game.” Head Coach Trudy Totten, agrees with Staci. “We played really well last week, and Staci played her heart out to allow us to win.” When asked about the upcoming post-season, Coach Totten says, “We want to win our State Tournament again, and win the rest of our games to finish with a great season.” Staci agrees. “We want to win States; that would make this a successful season. Staci currently carries a 3.5 GPA.
The Cross Lanes Christian Lady Warriors have had an up and down year. They have won some and lost some. They have a lot of young players on their squad. One of those young players is sophomore point guard/forward/center/everything Katie Monk. Last week in a 57-54 win over Hannan, Katie had a monster game, pouring in 40 points, collecting 23 rebounds, and coming up with 6 steals. When asked about her success Katie humbly replies, “We got back to the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, and shooting, and that allowed us to play well in the game. My teammates did a great job.” Head Coach Mike Cumberledge agrees with his player. “We want to get back to fundamentals and keep improving on our performance this year. Because we lost one of our star point guards last year, we have to rely on Katie to do a lot of the ball handling as well. If we can get others to step up in this area, I think we will be a force to be reckoned with in the post-season.” When asked about their expectations for the post-season, Katie says, “We won our tournament every year since I have been here, and I would like to do it again this year and not break the tradition.” Coach Cumberledge agrees. “If we can play well and peak at the end of the season, who knows what can happen in the post-season.” Katie excels off the court as well where she carries a 4.0 GPA. Her style of play reminds you of Cleveland Cavalier “Mr. Everything” LeBron James. Despite being a taller figure, Katie can handle the ball in traffic and drive to the hole as well as shoot outside, just like Mr. James.
Look for Staci, Katie, and other local area high school athletes to be named next week’s Cager of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc.
