Hurricane Middle School is proud to announce our recent success at the Putnam County Math Field Day competition held at George Washington Middle School on February 21, 2008. HMS students won 1st place in each middle school grade level.
In the 8th grade competition, Daniel Johnson, grandson of Paul and Nancee Johnson, earned 1st place, making this Daniel's third year of success in the Putnam County middle school MFD competition. He is also the Putnam County Spelling Bee champion. Doing great in his first time representing HMS at MFD, Ali El-Khatib placed fourth to become the alternate for the Putnam County 8th grade team.
HMS 7th graders were also very successful with a 1st place win by Ryan McLaughlin, son of Glenn and Vicki McLaughlin, and a third place win by Austin Horn, son of Amy Hello. Stuart Smith earned 7th grade alternate. In addition, Ben Meffert, son of Roland and Mary Meffert, won first place in the 6th grade competition. When discussing the competition, Ben states, "The most fun is the physical estimation. The worst part is the mental math because it's hard to do the work in your head."
Hurricane Middle School teachers, administrators and families are very proud of all the students who represented HMS at the competition. Team members have been practicing and studying hard for MFD while still keeping up with their regular classroom work.
Congratulations and good luck at the Region Math Field Day competition to be held April 5th, at West Virginia Technical University against county winners from Kanawha, Boone, and Clay counties.
