You would expect a city council member to know her town's borders. And you would certainly expect her to know if her city manager lives in her town. Especially when that city manager tells longtime residents to move to avoid the excessive Wal-Mart construction noise.
However, when Hurricane Councilwoman Patty Hager tried to defend the residency of City Manager Ben Newhouse, she apparently knew neither the boundaries or where Newhouse lives.
"He lives in Hurricane," says Hager. "He lives right down the street."
No, he doesn't.
"He has a Hurricane mailing address," says Hager. "He may not live in an annexed area, but he lives in Hurricane."
It doesn't matter if Newhouse has a Hurricane mailing address. Plenty of people have their mail sent to a post office the next town over. ()(Some Hurricane Creek residents get their mail in Winfield-more than five miles away) And Newhouse does not live in an annexed area of Hurricane.
PutnamLIVE.com checked Putnam County property tax and deed records. It was revealed in January that Newhouse doesn't live in Hurricane. The city retaliated hours later by arresting this publisher-who was acquitted in April.
Newhouse's residence has been a concern to some Hurricane citizens who are upset that he receives a salary of about $60,000 annually, plus benefits, and doesn't pay property taxes in Hurricane. Newhouse is also the only City Manager in Putnam County.
Should Hager care to pay Newhouse a visit, and actually see where he lives, she can find his house on Sweetbriar, off Teays Valley Road, near the Chase Park office complex and Calvary Baptist Academy.
"Where's Chase Park," asks a confused Hager.
It isn't in Hurricane.
"Do you really lose sleep over where Ben Newhouse lives?" snapped Hager, who does live in Hurricane, near Rite Aid.
No, it isn't that important. However, PutnamLIVE.com does have its facts straight. One other fact: Unlike Huntington and Charleston, Hurricane does not require its City Managers to live in the city limits.
