When former Putnam Parks and Recreation Commission President Sally Holliday and former Director Cordie O. Hudkins, Jr., built the beautiful picnic shelter at Valley Park, they had no idea it would be transformed into an "Ice" Castle.
However, after last winter's successful opening of an "ice" rink on top of the tennis courts, current Parks and Recreation Director Scott Williamson brilliantly joined the two projects and moved the faux ice pad under the shelter. The idea is to attract even more skaters and to take advantage of the shelter's wonderful kitchen.
"We were very pleased with the opening season," Williamson told PutnamLIVE.com during the summer. "However, rain often kept skaters away. By using the shelter, they can skate under the roof, still be outdoors, and their friends and family can watch from the picnic tables."
And, says Williamson, buy snacks from the state-of-the art kitchen that is part of the picnic shelter.
Williamson ordered more synthetic "ice" surface, 17 panels, for the skaters, as the square footage of the picnic shelter pad is larger.
"It will be bigger, better, and more fun this year," Williamson says. "Come on out and skate!"
Another advantage of the new location is that the tennis courts can still be used when the winter weather is nice. The new location is a "Win-win" for participants of both activities.
The rink is open weeknights from 6:00 to 9:00, Thursday and Friday, as well as noon to 9:00 p.m. on
Saturdays and 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sundays.
A skate session costs only $5 per person. If you need skate rentals,
they are $3. Skate sharpening is $4. Skate rental sizes run from 11
junior to 12 adult. Groups of 10 or more get free skate rentals.
Skating lessons are available. The six-week class is held every Monday. It costs $65 per person. Please call 304-562-3604 for more information about skating lessons.
