GIRIMONT WEIGHS IN ON US 35 TOLLS

Debra Girimont, a Republican candidate for the West Virginia House of Delegates is voicing her concerns over how to fund the remaining 13-mile segment of U.S 35 between the Buffalo Bridge and Henderson.

Estimates to complete the much-needed and unfunded road exceed $250 million. The West Virginia Division of Highways’ annual budget is approximately $1 billion.

“I am not a proponent of toll roads in general, but it is important that this road be completed without years of delay due to a lack of funding,” says Girimont. If we are forced to explore tolls, then the local citizens living along this stretch of road should not be saddled with the cost. I propose that local property owners be exempted from any tolls and let the transient Ohioans pay for the use of this road since it is primarily a connector route. One only needs to look at the traffic on this road to see it is predominantly Ohio license plates and heavy truck traffic – they should be the ones who pay the tolls,” she adds.

“Exempting the local property owners is the right thing to do. And it could be achieved by simply presenting up-to-date tax papers to the commission in charge of the toll road for a annual pass card,” Girimont says.

“It is important that we finish this segment as soon as possible but not on the backs of local citizens from Putnam and Mason Counties. Any budgeting the Division of Highways uses to estimate additional costs, should factor in this idea,” Girimont says.

Girimont is a Republican candidate for the House of Delegates, 14^th District representing this particular section of Putnam and Mason Counties.
