It's a news tradition, covering the first day of school. This year, it really is the "first day of school" for the brand new Teays Valley Elementary, and PutnamLIVE.com was there.
Principal Doug Pitzer welcomed 417 students to the sparkling new campus as secretaries in the office worked hard to register last-minute enrollees.
As students and teachers introduced themselves, Pitzer held orientation in the cafeteria, showing students the new kitchen.
The multi-million-dollar school was built by Gary Young's G & G Construction. This is Young's latest work of campus art, having built the George Washington Middle School in Eleanor several years ago. Once again, G & G pulled off the miracle of bringing the project in on-time and under budget, something the students could care less about but administrators greatly appreciate.
Out in the new playground, students broke in the new equipment, enjoying a break from their first-day studies.
The new school was built to alleviate overcrowding at Scott Teays and West Teays elementaries. Teays Valley Elementary will get a new name, colors, and a mascot in the coming months as students participate in the legacy of those choices.
The new school has a capacity of about 475 students, meaning that in the next few years, it too, will be over-capacity as Putnam County continues to expand, causing growing pains for district Superintendent Harold "Chuck" Hatfield.
All of those worries are in the future, however, as today is a day to celebrate a new school, a new day, and a new era in Putnam County education.
