COCHRAN NAMED GAMER OF THE WEEK
Press release courtesy of Teays Physical Therapy

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. is pleased to present this week's "Gridiron Gamer of the Week" award to J.R. Cochran of Winfield High School.

The Winfield Generals football team had some ups and downs this season. They went through a rebuilding year, fielding a bunch of seniors who had experienced limited playing time. They also played a lot of young players who hadn’t seen much varsity action.

The Generals had a 2-7 record heading into the last week of the season, and the outlook looked dim. They were facing a 5-4 Herbert Hoover team that was ranked at 17 in the State poles. If Herbert Hoover won they would be going to the playoffs again. The Winfield Generals thought otherwise, as they upset the Huskies bid for a State playoff run for the final score of 28-22.

A lot of that play was due to the running of sophomore tailback J.R. Cochran who carried the ball 34 times for 151 yards and one touchdown leading his team to the win.

When asked about his success J.R. says, "I was able to see the field real well, and got in the end zone once. I carried the ball bunch, and it gave me a chance to rack up some yards and help our team win."

Head Coach Bruce McGrew says, "J.R. had a real good game for us this past week. He has finally come to where he is learning the offense, and his hard work and determination has finally paid off." When asked about the team’s success, J.R. says, "One word: blocking. My line blocked real well and opened up some gaps, and I was able to find them."

With the Generals' season over, Winfield has to look ahead to next season's football team and the preparation in the meantime. Head Coach McGrew says, "Next year's team and their success begins with one word: attitude. If these kids have the attitude that J.R. has and come out and work hard in the off season in the weight room and in their skill development, I feel we have a good chance of having some good success next year."

J.R. agrees. "If we come out and work real hard in the weight room in the off season, I feel that we can get stronger and become a better football team next year.

"J.R. is not only a good player on the field; he carries himself well off the field as well. J.R. is a great kid to have on your football team. When he comes on the field he gives you everything he has and he tries to run over you and beat you," adds Coach McGrew. J.R. also excels in the classroom where he carries a 3.6 GPA.

J.R.'s running style reminds you of Washington Redskins tailback Clinton Portis. Known as one of the most well-rounded running backs in the NFL, Portis can run through you or around you. J.R. carries that mentality. He may look under-sized, but if you take him lightly, he will run through you and then he will bounce it outside for a long gain.

Coach McGrew, on the other hand, thinks of someone else. "J.R. reminds me of New York Giants running back Tiki Barber. He is kind of small, and he will hit the hole hard. Then all of sudden he will burst out unseen and go for a long gain," says Coach McGrew.

Look for J.R., and other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Gridiron Gamer of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc.
