The Winfield Lady Generals are off to another torrid start for the 2006-2007 campaign. Ranked #1 all year, they were beat by Summers County last week to bump them to the #2 spot. Taking the #1 spot were the Sissonville Indians, who also beat Winfield earlier in the year. A rematch was held last Saturday with a lot of pressure on both teams.  The Winfield High School Lady Generals stepped up to that pressure, and put on a great performance as they escaped with a 59-54 win.  That win was due to the play of junior All-State point guard Katie Cloxton. Katie had 9 points going into the fourth quarter, and saw her team down with just a little bit of time left. Katie took over the game, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter and reaching 30 points for the game as she led her team to victory. When asked about her success, Katie said, “I saw my team down, and realized I had to be a leader and step-up. My shots fell and it enabled us to get the victory.”  Katie is used to success, due to the fact that last year the Lady Generals won the state title. When asked about her outlook on the post-season, Katie said, “We want to play well and get out of our region and make it back to the state tournament and go from there.  We have a tough region, and we will probably play Sissonville again, but we have to do our best and keep trying in order to reach our goals.”  When asked who she compares herself to, Katie said, “I like to watch Lindsey Libby from Duke play. She is great player, and she works hard all the time. Hopefully that is what I do also.”  Katie not only excels on the court, but off the court as well where she carries a 3.5 GPA in the classroom.

The Buffalo Bison boys’ basketball team is off to a mediocre start for this season.  They enjoyed two straight state tournament bursts, but they lost some seniors from last years’ team, and they are young this year.  Last week, junior guard Adam Scott scorched the nets while leading his team to 2/3 victories.  In a 66-60 loss to Valley, Adam scored 32 points.  Later that week in a 74-51 win over Teays Valley Christian, Adam had 26 points, and later that week in an 80-56 win over Hannan, Adam again scored 30 points.  When asked about his success, Adam said, “I shot the ball well, and was able to take the ball to the hoop and draw fouls. I then hit my foul shots for some easy points.”  Head Coach Chuck Elkins is pleased with his guards play this year. “Adam had one of the best weeks we have ever had at Buffalo High School. He scored over 100 points last week, and that has really enabled us to have some success,” said Coach Elkins.  When asked about the post-season Adam said, “A lot of people say we have an easy region, and we can get to the tournament, but I disagree.  There are a lot of good teams in our region, and we have to play well each and every night to get ourselves in a position to win.”  Head Coach Elkins agrees with Adam. “Losing some of our players from last year, we expected to be in this position.  I do feel we are making progress and maybe at the end of the year we can turn it on and get back to Charleston.  Adam not only excels on the court, but off the court as well, where he carries a 3.5 GPA.  Coach Elkins said, “Adam is not only a great player on the court, but he is a great student in class and off the court as well.  He is a leader in our school, and a lot of the kids look up to him.”

Look for Katie, Adam, and other local area high school athletes to be named next week’s Cager of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc
