The pastor has no idea who he is, but she is thanking God for his generosity.
Teays Valley Church of God has announced that a local businessman is pledging up to $25,000 in matching funds for the development of its new the recreational and community center.
Located on Teays Valley Road just east of Rocky Step in Scott Depot, the complex is rising from the dirt today, but will have a pair of gymnasiums designed to meet the needs of a Putnam County community in need of a place to meet and compete.
"The goal of this businessman's efforts is to see wide community participation with this effort," says Pastor Melissa Pratt. "He has issued the challenge that other area businesses get involved in seeing this recreational facility developed and has pledged to match all corporate funds up to $25,000 in order to see the project move forward."
The 74 acres of property, while owned by the Teays Valley Church of God, is being developed as a gift for the people of Putnam County. Through the efforts and contributions of the church members and two community partners, land has been cleared for the development of two soccer/softball fields, a group of Boy Scouts is nearing completion of playground equipment installation, parking lots are underway, and a concession stand/restroom facility has been constructed.
In addition, there is a picnic shelter which seats 100 and is available for community use. Utilities are expected to be installed by early Fall.
What started off as a "Field of Dreams" is slowly becoming a full-fledged recreation center that will contribute to the physical and spiritual health of Putnam County residents.
Scott says church members are excited about expanding its ministries and are rallying behind the community center building project.
Earlier this year the church hosted a volleyball league where the Putnam County Sheriff's team triumphed.

A July 4th Patriots Parade was also held on the property.

Though not a member of the Teays Valley Church of God, it is the hope of this businessman that his generosity will spark not only greater community awareness regarding the ongoing project, but financial support, as well. West Virginia Senator Mike Hall (R-4th) was asked for comment on the gift and is enthusiastic about the private sector activity to provide public services for the community. Senator Hall commended the courage and passion of this businessman to inspire community participation.
"It is encouraging to me personally to see citizens try to provide something that will be of benefit far beyond their own organization," says Hall. "The Teays Valley Church of God should be commended for its efforts to provide much-needed facilities for our community. The need for soccer and softball fields and other recreational facilities in Putnam County is great."
Hall says the community center will be a financial asset for Putnam County as well as a ministry.
"It's also simply good for the economic development of the county," adds Hall. "As outside soccer and softball tournaments make their way here, hotels, restaurants and all area businesses will benefit. It's an effort that the community can support since it is for their benefit."
