BUFFALO WINS CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT
Sixth-Ranked Bisons Bring Home Trophy
Story courtesy of Charles Ray Harper

The unbeaten (4-0) Buffalo Bison traveled to Beckley on Friday, December 21st, 2007, to play the Mount Hope Mustangs in the Championship game of the Groovy 94/Pepsi Christmas Challenge Tournament at the Appalachian Bible College Gymnasium.

Buffalo blew the game open in the third quarter (29-12) en-route to a 73-51 victory behind the play of senior All-Stater Adam Scott who scored a game high 25 points (4 steals, 4 assists and 1 blocked shot).  All-State candidate Austin Lewis had a double/double, scoring 18 points (3-6 three pointers) and a game-high 11 assists.  Lewis also had a team-high 6 steals.  Scott and Lewis were almost unstoppable on defense and offense.

"That third quarter killed us," says Mt. Hope Coach Jim Maynor. "It wasn’t for lack of effort. It’s just that our guys are really inexperienced."

"The third quarter was our normal game," adds Bison coach Chuck Elkins. "We picked up the tempo a little bit, started finding the open man and got some easy baskets."

Junior Garrett Burdette added 12 points to the cause (2 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots).  (Garrett Burdette led in the preliminary game on Thursday night with a double/double 19 points and 10 rebounds for a Buffalo 48-41 victory over 9th State Ranked Midland Trail.  Adam Scott added 11 points in that game and Austin Lewis led the team with 5 assists.)

In the Mount Hope game, Junior Nathan Winterstein led the defense crashing the boards for 7 rebounds and 11 points.  Junior Schuyler Frazier had 4 rebounds and dished off 2 assists.  Freshman Cameron Jones had 4 rebounds, 3 points, 2 blocked shots and 2 steals.  Senior Jason Warner scored 2 points and had 2 rebounds.  Junior Drew Angle scored 2 points and also had 2 rebounds.  Sophomore Jared Tucker had 2 steals and 1 assist.  Cody Parkins, Josh Absten and Greg Rose all played well!

Coach Chuck Elkins has Buffalo off to a great 5-0 start.
