First Region 4 Section 1 Game
Senior infielder Andy Harrison had the big bat for Buffalo as he smashed two Doubles and drove in two ( 3 for the game ) runs in the 7 run devastation of the hapless White Falcons by The Bisons in the first inning. Senior centerfielder ( all state candidate ) Adam Scott had two hits. Junior infielder Kevin May was 2 of 3 hitting the ball and doubled. Sophomore Chris Belcher also doubled. Junior all state candidate and outfielder Adam Scott singled, And freshman Jared Tucker also singled.
After the first inning Wahama played better and only let Buffalo score two more runs . But there is a natural letup sometimes when you take a 7 - 0 lead.
But thanks to the defense of Buffalo led by the fine pitching of freshman Jason Lewis who pitched 6 innings of shutout baseball. Freshman Jared Tucker relieved him in the 7th inning and completed the no hitter. Jason Lewis in 6 innings gave up no hits struck out seven Wahama batters and gave up 3 walks on questionable calls. There was one error behind him. Jared Tucker struck out one Wahama batter in a mop up role
Coming in for Zuspan after his injury in the first for Wahama was junior Derek Veazey who pitched till the 4th inning when, sophomore relief pitcher Andrew Grimm came in ( in the ) 4th inning he was summoned in with the bases loaded with Buffalo runners. The Mason County School got 10-of-his-next-12 Bison batters he faced out. He struck out three Buffalo batters and only walked one. But it was all to late.
Also it is interesting that Wahama 's book says this , only one Wahama base runner advanced past 2nd base and that was sophomore Jacob Roach who walked and was thrown out at third on junior Derek Veazey's hard smash. It was their lone hit of the night.
I'll take head coach Jimmy Tribbles book anyday over Wahama coach Tom Cullen's book anyday. ( Jimmy is the best there is in my book. )
The 2nd game was also at Mason City
Wahama came back to score in the 2nd inning when senior pitcher Brandon Clark walked and stole 2nd on a wild pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Caleb Roach. Buffalo made the score 4 - 1 on a throwing Error in the 4th inning. Sophomore Garrett Underwood added a run in the fifth inning scoring Roach who had walked. Buffalo scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cap the scoring .
Sophomore catcher Chris Belcher was a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate for The Bisons.
It must not be funny for Wahama , The defending Class A Champion Buffalo Bisons never beat their old rival White Falcons in the regular season this year losing 5 - 3 at Mason City March 30th and losing 6 - 5 at home April 27th. Revenge is sweet when it most counts in the sectionals. But having the biggest bat for the Bisons was freshman Jason Lewis with a 3 run Home Run.
Senior Brandon Clark went the distance on the mound for the White Falcons and gave up 5 runs and 9 hits and struck out seven Bison hitters and gave up 5 walks and had an Error behind him. He was also the recipient of a rare triple play.
Rare Triple Play - For Wahama freshman William Zuspan nearly pulled off a unassisted triple play - In the 7th inning Jason Lewis and Adam Scott had got on with singles and nobody out. When Kevin May hit a hard line drive to Zuspan at 2nd base And Zuspan swiped up the ball for the first out and tagged the runner off second for the 2nd out. and threw to first beating the runner back for the third out. And a Rare Triple play.
Junior pitcher Adam Scott scattered 5 hits and gave up 3 runs and strikeout 8 Wahama Batters and walked 6 Wahama batters on some very bad calls and had no errors behind him. Adam Scott strikeout the final two Wahama batters after the bases became loaded those was two very critcal outs.
Buffalo had some great defense of their own - In the fifth inning After Underwood drove in the run for Wahama. Senior Cody Gerlach was at third and sophomore Garrett Underwood was at second for The White Falcons with one out. Then junior Derek Veazey hit a high chopper to Jared Tucker at third base Jared promptly tagged Gerlach out as he was off base, and threw on to first base to junior Kevin May to complete the double play.
The Bisons went on to a 5 - 3 victory over old rivals Wahama White Falcons for The Section 1 Championship.
Playing well for Buffalo in the tournament was - Senior Shawn Smith, sophomore Garrett Burdette, senior Josh Gilchrist, Senior 2nd baseman Jonathan Martin and backup catcher Nathan Wintersrein. Utility players - Cody Craig, Eric Crist , Joesph Meadows, Stevie Owens, David Powell, Cody Parkins, Chase Wysong,Corey Moore, Greg Rose.
