BEWARE OF B of A EMAIL SCAM
Do NOT Reply To "Online Banking Alert"
By Mark Hallburn

PutnamLIVE.com

If you receive the above "Online Banking Alert" in your email, DO NOT REPLY! The email is an Internet Scam. Instead, notify the police. If you do hit "reply," as                                  instructed, the sender                                  will be able to learn                                  much of your personal                              information and                                       possibly steal from                                     you.

"It looks very real,"                                    says Hurricane Police Sgt. Steve Lusher. "It looks official."

It isn't.

PutnamLIVE.com has learned that people around West Virginia have been receiving this email for some time. In fact, PutnamLIVE.com received the email the morning of December 6th. Ironically, it was during an interview of Putnam County Chief Deputy Stan Booth. At his request we forwarded the email to his office, as well as other law enforcement agencies around Putnam County.

"We will forward this to the F.B.I." Sgt. Lusher says. "We will also have one of our officers look at it. He's (Ofc. Eggleton) pretty good with computers."

Unfortunately, Eggleton has plenty to look at. On Thanksgiving Day, someone used the debit card account number belonging to this publisher. Nearly $850 was illegally charged to my account. The money has been refunded by my bank, BB&T, but it took several hours of signing affidavits, filling out police reports, and reviewing my account, plus a few days to get the money back.

The point is, Cybercrime can happen to you and anyone else. So be alert, and don't respond to email that you are unsure about.

"Call the police," Sgt. Lusher stresses. "That's what we are here for. Don't be a victim."

And never, ever, ever give out your account numbers or Social Security number online or anywhere else if you are unsure who is asking for the information.

Here is a list of Putnam County law enforcement agencies and their telephone numbers: Putnam County Sheriff's Department: 304-586-0256. Hurricane Police: 304-562-9911. West Virginia State Police: 304-586-2000. Winfield Police: 304-586-9200. F.B.I.: 304-525-4741.
