When you shop for groceries, you have a choice. You can shop at one of those huge corporately-owned supermarkets, or you can shop at a family- owned and operated store that has been a major part of Hurricane for more than 50 years.
A to Z Supermarket is about to celebrate 57 years on Main Street, offering great food with superiorr service from the Hodges family and their hand-picked staff of friendly people.
“Our service is what sets us apart,” says Danny Hodges. “We custom-cut meats the way you want them. Our ground beef is fresh, ground multiple times each day, and isn’t pre-packaged. We get our meat from West Virginia companies, not out-of-state or foreign companies.”
Travis Barnett is the A to Z Meat Department Manager. He took over the duties in May and has increased the variety of the meat selection. Barnett has added choices of luncheon meats, family packs of steaks, pork products, chicken, and other poultry. Barnett can also special order meats for special events or needs.
“That’s one of our special services,” Hodges says. “We will work with you to get special cuts of meat, special varieties of meats, at the highest quality.”
A to Z customers also love the supermarket’s produce department which offers fresh fruits and vegetables from Black Diamond or Corey Brothers market in Huntington and Charleston.
“We carry everything that is in season,” Hodges says. “Last week we had honeydew. We have a great selection of healthy produce that comes in daily.”
Looking for hot food? A to Z has a wonderful deli of home-made meats, sandwiches, salads, hot dinners, deviled eggs, cole slaw, and more.
“We slice our lunch meat to order,” Hodges says, “We also have relish and meat trays made to order, not pre-made. We offer chicken dinners, hot dogs, hamburgers, roast beef, and turkey.”
A to Z’s deli prices compare favorably to other lunch offerings around Hurricane with shorter lines. It’s perfect for the busy “grab-and-go” businessperson who wants fresh, quality food. You can telephone your order in before your lunch break to save you even more time. Either way the food is great!
The frozen food section of A to Z Supermarket offers everything from snack items, entrée’s, ice creams, frozen fruits and vegetables, even diet foods.
Just a few feet away is A to Z Supermarket’s bakery, offering delicious custom cake orders, pies, home-made fudge, cookies, and brownies. The bakers are constantly whipping up new creations to please everybody’s sweet tooth.
Don’t see what you want? Hodges is proud of A to Z’s ability to special-order items that customers request.
“If it’s available, we will do everything possible to get it for you,” Hodges says. “I am constantly adding items to our system so that we can order what our customers want. That’s a part of the service that we offer every day.”
“We’re very hands-on with our customers,” says Frozen-Food Manager Paul Dial. “Customer satisfaction is our highest priority.”
“If I’m working out on the floor and I see someone needing assistance,” says Hodges, “the first thing I do is try to help them. Not just point them to a certain aisle, but actually walk them to the item or get it for them.”
Of course, A to Z is also your one-stop shop for paying utility bills. Appalachian Power, Mountaineer Gas, and West Virginia American Water bills can be paid in-person at A to Z’s utility payment center which also offers rechargeable Master Cards.
Service. It’s what sets A to Z Supermarket above everyone else.
A to Z Supermarket was founded by Denver Hodges three generations ago. His sons, David and Ronnie Hodges operate the store which is also owned by their sister, Anna Lou Bledsoe, and brother, Johnny. David’s son, Danny, is the store manager.
In addition to the Hodges, more than 30 employees work hard to make A to Z a special place for customers to shop.
You’ll find A to Z at 2823 Main Street in Hurricane. There is plenty of convenient, free parking. The store’s telephone number is 304-562-9771 or 304-562-6195. A to Z Supermarket is open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
