Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. is pleased to present this week’s “Cager of the Week” awards to Skye Smith of Hurricane High School and Caleb Ashley of Winfield High School.
The Hurricane High School Lady Redskins are having a great season. After having some recent down years, the Lady Redskins are very competitive and they are showing improvement. Most of their success is due to the fact they are a young team, and are building on their youth.
One of the up and coming stars of their team is sophomore guard Skye Smith. Last week in a win over Lincoln County, Skye had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, completing the rare triple/double in the game.
When asked about her success, she says, “I wanted to come out and play well. My teammates played well and hit the shots they needed to. I was able to contribute in many different ways to allow us to get the win.”
Skye is excited about her team and the improved abilities they have shown. Skye says, “Our team has a lot of potential, and we want to build on that for this year. We obviously want to do well in the post-season, and hopefully win our section and region. Right now we want to build on our team’s success and continue it over the next couple seasons.”
Skye is also a superstar in the classroom where she carries a 4.2 grade point average.
The Winfield High School Generals have had another successful year. The Generals enjoyed a number one ranking for most of the season. A questionable ruling against one of Winfield star players allowed a technicality to drop them from the number one ranking.
However, the Generals fought back and showed that they are still one of the biggest teams to be reckoned with in Class AA.
Much of their success is due to the leadership of senior guard Caleb Ashley. In a win over rival Logan, Caleb scored 39 points in leading his team to victory. In the game, Caleb hit his first 6 three-point shots, and that set the mood.
Caleb says, “When I hit those first 6 threes, it got me going. I felt like the rim was a big bucket, and I was hitting everything I shot. It set the mood, not only for me, but for my teammates as well.”
Ashley is very exited about his team’s chances for the post-season. Winfield, despite playing in one of the most challenging regions in Class AA, feels if they come out of the region, they have a good chance of winning another state championship.
Caleb says, “We have to play a lot of good teams in our region, it will be a rough road and tough battle. We feel if we can come out we have a good shot at going back to the state tournament and hopefully winning another state title.”
Ashley is also a General in the classroom where he carries a 3.0 grade point average.
Look for Skye, Caleb, and other local area high school athletes to be named next week’s Cagers of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc.
