Erica Drennan of Confidence Elementary and Lynn Schwallie of Scott                             Teays Elementary                                   learned this week that                               they are among 25                                outstanding West                                    Virginia teachers to                                   earn the Golden Apple                             Award from the Arch                                 Coal Foundation.

The Arch Coal teacher recognition program is different from other such awards programs in that teachers must be nominated by members of the public who recognize their outstanding dedication and professionalism. To those nominated, this is as important as the award itself.

Putnam Superintendent Harold "Chuck" Hatfield expressed “no surprise” in learning that these teachers have been recognized. “Both of these teachers have consistently high performance in the classroom and in the profession. We’ve pleased and proud for them,” he says.

More than 400 West Virginia teachers were nominated for the Arch Coal Teacher Achievement award.
